Most people think bad decisions are what hold them back.
They’re wrong.
The most expensive decision is usually the one you never make.
Not because you chose the wrong path.
Because you chose to stay standing at the crossroads.
I’ve coached entrepreneurs who spent three years researching a business they never launched.
Leaders who stayed in roles they had already outgrown because the next step felt uncertain.
Business owners who knew exactly which employee wasn’t a fit but kept waiting for “one more sign.”
And every single one of them paid the same price:
Time.
Time is the only asset you never earn back.
We Think Waiting Keeps Our Options Open
It feels responsible.
It feels strategic.
It feels safe.
“I’ll wait until the market settles.”
“I’ll wait until I feel more confident.”
“I’ll wait until I know exactly what to do.”
But waiting doesn’t freeze life.
It simply allows life to keep moving without you.
While you’re waiting…
Someone else launches.
Someone else asks for the opportunity.
Someone else starts building experience.
Someone else becomes the expert they once doubted they could become.
Progress doesn’t belong to the person with perfect clarity.
It belongs to the person willing to move before certainty arrives.
Confidence Doesn’t Come First
One of the biggest myths in leadership is that confidence creates action.
The opposite is usually true.
Action creates confidence.
Every meaningful accomplishment in your life probably started before you felt ready.
You applied before you knew everything.
You started the business before you had every answer.
You became a parent without reading every book.
You learned by doing.
Yet somewhere along the way, many of us convinced ourselves that our next chapter requires complete certainty.
It doesn’t.
It requires movement.
Every Decision Creates Two Futures
When you’re making a decision, you’re usually comparing two options.
Stay.
Go.
Hire.
Wait.
Launch.
Delay.
But there’s actually a third option we rarely think about.
The future created by indecision.
It’s the business that never grows because every opportunity gets overanalyzed.
It’s the relationship that slowly fades because no difficult conversation ever happens.
It’s the career that plateaus because comfort quietly replaced courage.
Indecision isn’t neutral.
It’s a decision with consequences.
Try One Better Question
Instead of asking:
“What if this doesn’t work?”
Try asking:
“What does it cost me if I don’t try?”
That question changes everything.
Because now you’re measuring the opportunity cost, not just the risk.
And opportunity cost has a way of revealing that staying still is often the more expensive choice.
Your Future Self Is Counting on Today’s Decisions
The version of you that exists a year from now isn’t built by one giant breakthrough.
They’re built by hundreds of small decisions that compound over time.
One uncomfortable conversation.
One proposal sent.
One investment made.
One boundary established.
One brave “yes.”
Leadership isn’t about always making perfect decisions.
It’s about making decisions that move you forward, learning quickly, and adjusting when necessary.
Momentum is almost always more valuable than perfection.
A Question to Leave You With
Imagine it’s one year from today.
What decision would your future self thank you for making this week?
Not next quarter.
Not when everything feels easier.
This week.
Because your future isn’t waiting for certainty.
It’s waiting for your next decision.
